Abstract The liver plays a critical role due to its multifunctionality, encompassing nutrient metabolism, regulation of blood volume, immune system support, endocrine modulation of growth pathways, lipid homeostasis, and xenobiotic compound breakdown. Nonetheless, hepatic injuries can lead to severe conditions, such as NAFLD. Existing studies suggest that epicatechin (EC) may confer benefits by mitigating hepatic inflammation, but our current understanding of its potential adverse effects on hepatic metabolism in obese animal models remains limited. Moreover, it is imperative to emphasize the presence of metabolic differences between sexes, as premenopausal overweight or obese women exhibit a lower risk of developing hepatic steatosis than men of the same age and BMI. These discrepancies may be associated with increased hepatic fat oxidation and/or reduced de novo lipogenesis in women. However, it is crucial to elucidate that this apparent female advantage is not attributable to insulin sensitivity. In light of this context, the primary objective of this research is to examine the impact of EC on the hepatic metabolism of obese and eutrophic female mice under thermoneutral conditions. We will evaluate various parameters, including weight gain, glucose and lipid metabolism, liver histology, and gene expression related to hepatic metabolism. The findings derived from this study will significantly contribute to scientific knowledge regarding the potential adverse effects of EC on the liver, providing invaluable insights for developing therapeutic strategies in managing liver diseases, particularly NAFLD. | |
