Abstract

This research project is organized around a problem: how were war histories produced in Brazil between the 19th and 20th centuries? Therefore, it seeks to answer which writing practices were valued, used or developed for the specific narrative of military conflicts such as the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), the War of Canudos (1896-1897) and other military conflicts that occurred in brazilian territory during this period. To answer this central question, the project uses texts written by authors such as Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay (Visconde de Taunay) (1843-1899), Euclides da Cunha (1866-1909), Dionysio Cerqueira (1847-1910), André Rebouças (1838-1898), Dantas Barreto (1850-1931), Luiz Schneider (1804-1878), José Maria Paranhos Júnior (Barão do Rio Branco) (1845-1912) and Augusto Tasso Fragoso (1869-1945), who devoted themselves to make these military events historic in their narratives, produced contemporaneously or after these wars. The problems developed for the composition of this project dialogue with questions pertinent to the area of History of Historiography and take the definitions of "historiographical operation" by Michel de Certeau and "regimes of historicity" and "historiographical regimes" by François Hartog as a methodological contribution to the elaboration and development of specific objectives, which aim to submit the cited texts to an analysis of the composition of practices and models of writings mobilized in the elaboration of historiographies that take brazilian wars as subjects.
