Abstract

This is a proposal for a 4-month BEPE at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Professor Irene de Jong. As part of his PhD thesis, the candidate is writing a narratological commentary on Quintus of Smyrna's epic poem the Posthomerica - a late antique rendition in 14 Books of the events that happen between Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. This poem had a bad reputation in the 20th Century, but has attracted much interest after the 2000s, with an especially high surge in the last five years, as the number of recent publications show. Europe has been the center of the debate on the poem, and the participant wishes to bring Brazil, USP, and FAPESP to the map of Quintus scholars worldwide. The University of Amsterdam is the ideal base for this endeavor because it is the epicenter of the application of narratology - the methodology the candidate has been using - to Ancient Greek literature, thanks to the work of Professor de Jong. She was a pioneer in this field and still is the most prominent figure in the application of this method to classical literature. From Amsterdam, the candidate wishes to maintain a close contact not only with Professor de Jong and the Dutch academic community, but also with scholars from other countries who are currently working on late antique literature, narratology, and the Posthomerica.
