Abstract

cervical cancer is a serious public health problem. Approximately 50% of patients are still diagnosed with locally advanced stages (LACC). Although there is treatment for LACC, most women diagnosed at this stage still resist standard therapy or cannot perform different treatment fronts due to high budgetary costs. Therefore, the identification of specific biomarkers that are able to predict the response to therapy and/or act as treatment target molecules become crucial in order to improve the survival of patients who are resistant to cervical cancer therapy. Among the numerous biomarkers studied, genetic and epigenetic alterations have been widely discussed as potential molecular biomarkers in the cancer studies. Between them, microRNAs (miRNAs) dysregulation expression has been shown to play a crucial role in the progression and malignancy of cervical cells. Recent studies have pointed out miR-205-5p as an important biomarker to identify the progression of cervical cancer and data from our research group identified that this molecule may be a biomarker of response to cisplatin.
