Prognostic role of hematological indicators in canine patients with mastocytoma: a retrospective study

Abstract

The systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) and the neutrophil-lymphocyte, monocyte and platelet ratio were identified as hematological indices that simultaneously reflect the inflammatory and immunological status of cancer patients. This type of analysis is already used in human medicine, but little explored in veterinary medicine. Inflammatory occurrence, which plays a central role in the tumor microenvironment, is closely related to tumor development, progression, and metastasis. For neoplasms with a high incidence rate and variable biological behavior, such as canine mast cell tumor, there is little that explores the potential of these indices in refining diagnosis, treatment modalities and prognosis. A potential prognostic factor would be the analysis of hematological parameters (NRL, PLR, MLR and SII) based on data obtained from the blood count of patients affected by mast cell tumor, which may reflect the patient's immune/inflammatory profile. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to use these indices to complement the factors already used as clinical, epidemiological parameters and histological grading system in the assessment of tumor evolution and success of treatment protocols. The study consists of collecting retrospective data on blood counts from patients from the HOVET service at FMVZ-USP and from private clinics undergoing different therapeutic approaches and, based on the results obtained, it is expected that a relationship between hematological indices and the survival of trained patients, to demonstrate the possibility of a new low-cost prognostic and predictive tool for dogs with cutaneous mast cell tumor.
