Abstract

I intend, in this project for an overseas research internship, to further develop my ongoing dissertation entitled "A Flemish painter in Portugal: Dona Catarina's portrait and the circuit of praises in the court of Dom João III (1521-1557)" - FAPESP process no. 22/08455-6. As established in my master's project, the international internship will enable access to primary sources and bibliography that require detailed examination through in-person research, in order to investigate the court portraiture practice in Renaissance Portugal. Thus, the planning includes research in Portugal, especially in Lisbon and Porto, with additional missions in Madrid, specifically at the Prado Museum where the portrait is currently located. Doing so entails, first, inventorying, qualifying and categorizing materials on the research field, aiming to provide theoretical and methodological precision and analytical acuity for the discussions promoted in the dissertation. Second, visiting museum collections and exhibitions in order to analyze the portrait and related documents in loco, situating them in a cultural environment. Reading them provides, moreover, recovery of dated argumentaries on the conditions of its execution, transmission and reception. The underlying contribution to the studies is to elucidate the dynamics of cultural exchanges in pictorial decorum of portraiture in the Portuguese Renaissance and its developments based on the case of Catherine of Austria's portrait executed by Anthonis Mor.
