Energy needs and intake in adolescents in the city of São Paulo: analysis according to the recommendations of the Dietary Reference Intakes - 2023

Abstract

Introduction and justification: An accurate estimate of energy expenditure is essential for the assessment of population groups. However, the 2023 Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) equations do not take into account data from developing countries, which may limit their application. The analysis of adolescents is essential because this population group presents a worrying prevalence of overweight and the health status in this age group can trigger negative health outcomes during adult life. Objectives: Estimate the energy needs of the adolescent population in the city of São Paulo using the Dietary Reference Intakes - 2023 formulas, comparing the estimates with the previous version (DRI-2005) and with the reference population. Material and methods: This is a population-based cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sample of residents of the city of São Paulo, based on data from adolescent participants in the ISA-Nutrição study. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected, in addition to assessing the level of physical activity using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Prevalence estimates and 95%CI will be calculated and compared in the RStudio software, considering a significance level of 5% and sample complexity.
