Abstract

This work aims to analyze the female representation in the first book of the historiographical work Ab Urbe condita libri ("Since the foundation of the city") which is composed of 142 books in their entirety, with only 35 preserved. The work was written by the Latin author Livy in the first century BC. Understanding how gender relations have been studied in historiography is one of the questions of great importance of this research. In this work, it will be taken into account the social position of the author, belonging to a Roman province. The first book of the work deals with the origins of Rome and Royalty, with great female participation. The book can be an object of great relevance in the studies of social relations in Roman Antiquity, because it presents indications of the author's vision and interpretation. Historiographical discussions will be developed from gender studies, based on the studies of Joan Scott and Judith Butler. Finally, based on the concept of representation of the historian Roger Chartier, it will be analyzed how the image of women was built in the formation of Rome through the work of Livy.
