Abstract

This project will explore and compare the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mobility, accessibility, and livelihoods of marginalized groups in Cape Town (South Africa), the Ruhr Region (Germany), and São Paulo (Brazil) through mixed methods, contributing to the project "Impact of COVID-19 on the way of life, mobility and accessibility of marginalized groups (ICOLMA)". The objective is to carry out a diagnosis based on an empirical analysis of how these territories were specifically affected by the pandemic in five predefined dimensions: i) the industrial/manufacturing base spatial development of each territory; ii) places of employment; iii) the migration pattern; iv) the role of public transport and; v) the increase in precariousness and the reduction of formal jobs. It will also identify which public policies and coping mechanisms were adopted in order to serve marginalized and more vulnerable groups. Based on these investigations, a conceptual framework on livelihood framework will be structured and explored - based on case studies - as well as a comparative analysis of urban survival mechanisms during and after the pandemic (2020-2022) and its possibilities for the production of fairer and more resilient cities based on theory and practice in the field of planning.
