Abstract

Introduction: Patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries are more susceptible to severe pain, which can contribute to prolonging recovery time and increasing the use of opioids, incurring greater risks and health-related expenses, to developing chronic pain and negatively impacting functionality and quality of life. Objective: To verify the incidence and factors associated with severe pain in post-operative patients with orthopedic and traumatic conditions. Method: Cross-sectional, quantitative and analytical study, to be carried out in the Orthopedics and Traumatology ward of a university hospital in the city of São Paulo, involving patients over 18 years of age in the post-operative period for orthopedic and traumatic conditions. To collect demographic and clinical data, a semi-structured questionnaire was prepared. Postoperative pain will be assessed using the Numerical Verbal Scale, severe pain will be defined by a pain score of 7 or more. To track symptoms of anxiety and depression, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale will be applied. The data will be entered into the Research Electronic Data Capture platform and analyzed using R software version 4.2.2. Categorical variables will be presented in absolute and percentage frequencies and continuous variables in measures of central tendency and dispersion. For comparison between groups, considering quantitative variables, the t-student or Mann-Whitney test will be used and for categorical variables, the Chi-square or Fisher's exact test will be used.
