Abstract

Despite the increase in productivity and the quantity produced, hegemonic capitalist agriculture has generated a series of environmental, social and economic problems, which has encouraged the search for alternatives for sustainable transitions in the agricultural field. Agroecology emerges as a proposal for sustainable development through the association the conservation of natural resources and agrobiodiversity in agricultural production, as well as the valorization of traditional knowledge. One of the types of agroecological practice is the agroforestry system, which stands out for the increase in biodiversity related to food production. One of the objectives of alternative agricultural production methods is to ensure greater social equity and social well-being in support of local development, without depending on the impositions and external resources of the conventional model of agriculture. Thus, the present stage of research aims to deepen the performance of agroforestry as an alternative for land use, that is, in different territorial contexts and its contribution at the international level to sustainable development. To do so, an extensive bibliographical research, reading of texts, participation in research groups guided by Professor Kei Otsuki, interviews with professors about sustainable transitions at the University of Utrecht and other Dutch universities.
