The research project aims to investigate the iconography of Our Lady's rosary and its relationship with cultural and religious conceptions regarding the worship of the Virgin and the Child in Minas Gerais during the colonial period. The research proposal has been developed with the intention of promoting the historical and iconological study of devotional objects dedicated to the worship of Our Lady of the Rosary, including rosaries, oratories, ex-votos, processional banners, paintings, sculptures, engravings, Records of Saints, and celestial representations that adorn the ceilings of the Minas Gerais chapels erected in her honor. From the perspective of Art History and with the purpose of understanding the history of devotion in the Captaincy of Minas Gerais, our studies will focus on artistic objects produced in homage to Our Lady of the Rosary and the relationships between the Christian discourse propagated by these images and the catechization of Africans and Afro-descendants involved in the experience of slavery. At this point, the main objective of the project is to comprehend how devotion facilitated the connection between African beliefs and Catholicism, and how brotherhoods transformed into spaces for the expression of cultural and religious diversity within black communities in Portuguese America.
