Abstract

This internship abroad is part of the scholarship holder's Post-Doctoral project (funded by FAPESP with a Postdoctoral grant - Process 2022/09590-4) and aims to progress the creation of a descriptive chart of the nasals (represented in the spelling such as , , , and <~>) from the ancient period of the Portuguese language. The corpus of this work consists of 250 Galician-Portuguese medieval cantigas, distributed as follows: the first 100 religious poems, by Dom Afonso X, king of León and Castile; and 150 secular poems, 50 from each of the three canonical genres. The methodology adopted is based on observing the possibility (or not) of variation in the written representation of these elements from the archaic historical period, as well as the position occupied by nasal consonants in the syllable and in the word, in order to verify the following points: 1) the status of simple nasals in the context of onset and coda of the syllable; 2) the nasalization of vowels/diphthongs in the different positions inside the syllable and the word. The data will be investigated from the non-linear phonological models point of view. Through this internship, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Paul O'Neill, it will be possible to carry out a relevant part of the scholarship holder's Post-Doctoral project (analysis of the phonological status of simple nasals and the nasalization of vowels/diphthongs from the ancient period) and contribute to the development of a phonological characterization of nasal consonants from that time in history.
