Abstract

In Brazil, despite affirmative action policies, racial inequality persists. Recent studiesreveal an increase in educational disparities between racial groups. Furthermore, blackstudents tend to choose less valued undergraduate courses. This study investigates theimpact of black teachers on black students on various outcomes, including SAEB grades,ENEM performance, choice of undergraduate courses, college enrollment, employability, and earnings. It analyzes how these effects vary with the student's grade level, gender, initial performance, and parental education and explores the mechanisms through whichracial matching effects operate. This is the first study to examine these effects in Brazil, where there is a racially complex context. Through this study, we aim to highlight possibleavenues that policymakers could use to promote educational equity and improve labormarket opportunities for black individuals in Brazil.
