Abstract

This outreach project covers the symbiosis of fungus-farming ants, a notorious example of interactions between organisms. In this mutualistic relationship, ants provide shelter and substrate for the growth of fungi, which in turn, are consumed as a food source. In addition to disseminating the basic principles of this symbiosis, this proposal intends to explore the relationships of these insects with other associated microorganisms and their biotechnological potential, as well as how ants organize themselves to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms from their colonies. Three media products will be prepared covering: (i) the diversity of fungus-farming ants, (ii) interactions with microorganisms, and (iii) ant cleaning behaviors for protection against harmful microorganisms. Initially, we plan to develop one documentary for each topic, which will be presented to the general public through social media platforms (Instagram and YouTube). We expect to promote a clear understanding of the fungus-farming ant symbiosis in an accessible manner, while also providing training for the student team in the scientific dissemination of other science-related topics, ultimately contributing for the integration of scientific knowledge into our society.
