Abstract

Osteoporosis and its main consequence, fracture, is a global public health problem. Bone fragility fractures typically occur in the hip, spine and wrist, although they can affect any bone in the skeleton. The evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) at these sites by dual emission X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is currently considered the gold standard method for diagnosing osteoporosis, however, a high percentage of individuals present fractures with non-osteoporotic BMD values. Furthermore, DXA does not distinguish between the cortical and trabecular compartments. The trabecular bone score (TBS) is a method that allows estimating the quality of bone microarchitecture, using gray texture, from the image of the lumbar spine acquired by bone densitometry (DXA). TBS has been shown to be a good predictor of fractures regardless of bone density and risk factors associated with fracture. For it to be better interpreted, local reference values are recommended to account for population differences.TBS will be evaluated on images previously obtained in bone densitometry equipment (Hologic - QDR 4500) of approximately 500 healthy female individuals, using the TBS iNsight program (version 3.0.3.0-Medmaps).The objective of this work is to establish a normative curve for the trabecular bone score (TBS) in healthy women in different age groups, in a sample of the Brazilian population.
