Abstract

The presence of work and the combination of work and study are constitutive of the youth condition in Brazil. It is no coincidence that the categories of student worker and student worker have gained prominence in theoretical production in the field of education. Although recent studies show that the presence and combinations of these two dimensions vary according to age, social origin, gender, color/race and place of residence, little attention has been paid to another relevant dimension of the youth experience: family life. The project presented here aims to delve deeper, both from a bibliographical point of view and from the point of view of analyzing data obtained from field research carried out between 2020 and 2023, into the combination of work and study in the experiences of young workers from the urban outskirts of São Paulo, incorporating family dynamics. Looking at the interrelationships between studies, work and family life will also make it necessary to analyze the gender category in interface with the youth category. The focus will be on the trajectories and challenges experienced by young people who were working in a myriad of situations - informal, precarious or self-employed - which are now being called "entrepreneurship", given the new configurations of work and capital. The aim is to contribute both to advances in the production of knowledge in the fields of the sociology of work, education and youth, and to the construction of public policies aimed at young people that take into account the complexity of their journeys, their experiences and their actions, given the precariousness of rights and the deepening uncertainties in contemporary times.
