Effects of different additives intake on fermentative, immunological, inflammatory, metabolic, satiety and fecal microbiota variables of obese dogs

Abstract

Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in dogs and cats and is considered a state of chronic inflammation responsible for various metabolic changes in dogs. Studies indicate that supplementation with certain additives can contribute to the health and well-being of obese animals; however, comparative investigations of additives in the canine species are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of ingesting different additives in the diet of obese dogs on biochemical, metabolic, immunological, inflammatory, satiety, and intestinal health parameters. For this project, six experimental diets will be formulated: Control Diet (CTL), without inclusion of hydrolyzed protein or beta-glucans from any source; Hydrolyzed Diet (HD) - control diet with substitution of 5.0% non-hydrolyzed chicken protein for 5.0% liver hydrolysate; Beta-Glucans Diet A (BGA) - control diet with inclusion of 1000ppm of 1,3 beta-glucans; Beta-Glucans Diet B (BGB) - control diet with inclusion of 1000ppm of 1,3-1,6 beta-glucans; Hydrolyzed Diet + 1000ppm 1,3 beta-glucans (HD-BGA1000) - control diet with substitution of 5.0% non-hydrolyzed chicken protein for 5.0% liver hydrolysate and inclusion of 1000ppm of 1,3 beta-glucans; Hydrolyzed Diet + 500ppm of 1,3 beta-glucans (HD-BGA500) - control diet with substitution of 5.0% non-hydrolyzed chicken protein for 5.0% liver hydrolysate and inclusion of 500ppm of 1,3 beta-glucans. Thirty-six male or female obese adult neutered dogs will be included. Each experimental group will consist of six animals, randomized in a double-blind model. Dogs will be considered obese with a body fat percentage greater than 30%, determined by the isotopic dilution method.
