Abstract

After the acute period of SARS-Cov-2 viral infection, many people still report persistent symptoms of the infection, a manifestation known as COVID-longa. This diagnosis is accompanied by complaints of difficulty concentrating, headaches, fatigue and, above all, muscle weakness. Considering that these muscle complaints directly interfere with the practice of these individuals' daily activities, there is a need to understand the mechanisms involved in the presence of these symptoms. Studies have hypothesized that the appearance of these symptoms is related to viral infection, either as a second response to the initial infection, as well as viral proliferation spreading later to these tissues, or as a result of the immune response, whether acute or chronic. In order to find answers to these questions, this project aims to investigate whether the virus is present in the skeletal muscle of individuals with COVID-longa, as well as to identify morphological and/or functional changes in this tissue. Since viral infection promotes an intense immune response, this project also aims to investigate possible signs of inflammation and pro-inflammatory signaling, commonly associated with SARS-Cov-2 infection, through histological analysis, the content of sarcomeric proteins and cytokines, relating our results to the possible effects of a deregulated immune response and functional assessments to understand the real impact of this infection on the functional performance of muscle tissue. With this, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on the musculoskeletal system.
