Abstract

The aim of this study is to verify the association of the built environment indicators with the practice of physical activity in the different domains and with the nutritional status, in adults living in the city of São Paulo, SP. Data from the cohort study " Health Survey of Sao Paulo-ISA: Physical Activity and Environment" will be used, based on the Health Survey of Sao Paulo conducted between 2014-2015, later reevaluated in 2020-2021 (second wave) and in 2023-2024 (third wave). Baseline sampling was performed by clusters and 3,406 people aged 18 years or more covering 150 census tracts from five administrative health areas (30 sectors in each area) were interviewed. The physical activity was evaluated by questionnaires and nutritional status by body mass index with self reported weight and height. The addresses of 3,145 adults (92.5% of the total) were geocoded and rays were traced around the homes (500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters) with the built environment data obtained through official databases of public agencies. Between the period of 2020 and 2021 (second wave), a second evaluation of this same group of people was performed by telephone survey, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, being located about 35% of the original sample, totalizing 1,431 people aged 18 years or more. The other stage of data collection (third wave) was started in 2023, through face-to-face interviews. In both stages, a new assessment of the level of physical activity was performed, using the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) long version and, in the third wave, directly by accelerometry. There was also a new report of weight and height. The built environment variables were updated and new evaluation was also made through auditing in the places of residence. In the data analysis, will be considered as outcome variables physical activity in leisure time and as a form of displacement, moderate and vigorous physical activities, sedentary behavior and body mass index for the calculation of overweight and obesity. The exposure variables will be the built environment items within the rays. The analyses will be controlled by social, demographic and health variables, such as gender, age, schooling, socioeconomic level, self-selection of neighborhoods to live and area of residence in Sao Paulo. Multilevel regression models will be performed using clusters of households and census tracts. Statistical analysis will be performed using Stata software, version 15.0.
