Abstract

Thinking about the urban imaginaries created by cinematic language, the doctoral research aims to discuss the relationship between urban films of the Slow Cinema trend and the discourse of slow urban experience that it constructs. To do so, the choice is made to analyze some films of this trend, bringing together the principles of aesthetic slowness with existing debates on slow and erratic practices in the city space. The goal is to form a critical perspective on real urban experiences, using the material and virtual experience of urban space as represented in contemporary cinema as a lens. Thus, intersecting knowledge from the fields of art, culture, and urban studies, the overall hypothesis of the research is that there is a similarity between the process of apprehending the film and the represented city. In this relationship, a slow territoriality is constituted that, throughout the registration of the duration of the urban, consolidates an erratic experience through the spatialities contained in Slow Cinema films. In this sense, beyond the possibility of internationalizing the research, the opportunity for a research stay abroad is sought to develop these issues. The period of mobility intersects a cycle of film analysis with theoretical-critical axes of research aimed at debating notions of temporalities, slow practices, and contemporary globalized urban living. Therefore, the approach with the external research professor and the group to which he belongs is consolidated as fundamental, as they seek to research urban space, public space, hybridization and transculturality, socio-spatial processes, landscape, and contemporary life. During this period, the aim is to structure a debate, internationalized in nature, on the experience of contemporary urban living, from a perspective of transnational globalized inhabiting. Furthermore, this work plan also includes participation in a double degree agreement, at the doctoral level, already established between the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (IAU.USP) and the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Sevilla (ETSAS-US).
