Abstract

This study aims to examine the portrayal of female characters in the initial book of Livy's Latin historical work, Ab Urbe Condita, as exempla for women of their era and subsequent generations in Rome. It will consider the author's social background, originating from a Roman province. The research will engage with historiographical debates on gender studies and the dynamics between the feminine and masculine in Ancient Rome. We propose to carry out part of this research at the University of Exeter, where we believe that Professor Rebecca Langlands will be able to help us enrich research on exempla and the role of women in Rome in the first century BC.
