Abstract

Running is effective in increasing the level of physical activity and promotes several beneficial health effects. However, the practice of running is not free of adverse effects. The main adverse effect of running is running-related injuries. Running injuries increase the likelihood that injured runners drop out running, in addition to discouraging the practice of physical activity in general and generating health costs. Furthermore, effective interventions to prevent running injuries are scarce. Therefore, the general objectives of this research project are: (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of an online program for preventing running-related injuries - RunIn3; (2) evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an online running-related injury prevention program - RunIn3; (3) prospectively investigate the economic impact of acute and repetitive-use running-related injuries in Brazilian recreational runners; (4) investigate the effectiveness of the RunIn3 online program in changing preventative behavior regarding running-related injuries; and (5) evaluate the implementation process of an online running-related injury prevention program (RunIn3). For this purpose, data already collected during a type 1 hybrid pragmatic randomized controlled study of 1 year duration will be analyzed; and a new qualitative data collection will be carried out to complement objective 5.
