Abstract

The luminescence emitted by minerals has long been used in paleoenvironmental studies, some of them focusing on the luminescence emitted by carbonates. The amount of Mg impurity in calcite has a direct correlation with the crystallization temperature that in turn has been seen to affect the calcite thermoluminescence (TL) emission (i.e. high temperature calcites are often found to have more Mg impurity and exhibit higher TL than low temperature calcites). Here we will investigate whether the TL emission of planktonic foraminiferal calcite can be used as a proxy for changes in sea surface temperature.
