Abstract

This project aims to understand the political economy of implementing bike lanes and bus lanes, policies that have been particularly confrontational and controversial in the city of São Paulo in recent decades. It seeks to investigate both the impact of political factors on the decision-making process of locating these infrastructures by politicians and public administrators, as well as the electoral consequences of these policies for the political actors involved, especially mayors. To achieve this, a mixed-method approach will be employed, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative aspect will involve constructing econometric models to identify (1) the extent to which political factors influence the location of new infrastructures and (2) the electoral impact that the implementation of these infrastructures generates for the political actors responsible for them. The qualitative component, on the other hand, will seek to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms that explain the quantitative results obtained, both from the perspective of decision-makers and voters
