Abstract

Atherosclerosis represents the primary etiopathogenic mechanism underlying ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular diseases, which are responsible for the leading causes of mortality in Brazil. The Framingham study identified the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol plasma concentration in the blood as one of the main risk factors associated with such diseases. Reducing the mortality rate and improving the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases can be achieved through efficient management of LDL, which presents distinct particularities in different groups, including gender variations. This highlights the importance of analyzing LDL reduction in men and women who are taking statins. The disparity in response to statin treatment between the sexes may have significant implications for the management of cardiovascular disease. This retrospective study focuses on the clinical, laboratory, echocardiographic, coronary angiographic characteristics and prognosis (hospitalizations, cardiovascular death, and death from all causes) of patients from the Unified Health System with chronic IHD treated at the InCor-HC.FMUSP outpatient clinic in the last ten years, from January 2012 to December 2021.Patients included in the study have diagnoses according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) from I20 to I25 and its subdivisions. The analysis will focus on the importance of gender in reducing LDL in patients treated with statins to achieve an LDL cholesterol value d50 ml/dL in patients with IHD. Through this evaluation, we aim to obtain an improved understanding of the role of sex in the effectiveness of statin treatment and the prognosis of IHD.
