Abstract

Sherlock Holmes, a character created by Arthur Conan Doyle, was not the first detective to appear in the universe of enigma-narratives; however, he is perhaps the most famous and the most notorious to readers, who even believe that he was a real person. Another great character of the detective world is Jules Maigret, created by Georges Simenon. Unlike Holmes, Maigret emerged in a troubled time after World War I and sought to find the reasons why criminals committed irresponsibilities. Simenon intended to understand and welcome these offenders, putting his detective and readers against the dehumanizing system of the time. In this work, what will be compared is the presence of irony and humor present in two novels: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), by Doyle and Le Chien jaune (1931), by Simenon, in order to observe how they manifest and what is their function in the narratives. To achieve these objectives, it will be used the studies on humor from Bremer and Roodenburg (2000), Saliba (2017) and Bergson (1983), as well as studies on irony from Alavarce (2009), Hutcheon (2000) and Muecke (1995) and about the police novel from Lins (1953), Todorov (2006), Narcejac (1991) and Mandell (1988).
