Abstract

This research project aims to study the urban aspects of precarious settlements through the lens of climate justice. Methodologically, employing a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory approach, the study will utilize urban form studies to understand the morphological characteristics of the fringe areas of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. It will examine correlations and investigate how extreme events and climate change impact these settlements. The geographical scope of the study is the Conceição Site, developed by COHAB in the 1980s, located in the district of Cidade Tiradentes, São Paulo-SP, focusing particularly on the community of Cachoeira das Garças, an precarious settlement based on public land. The primary objective is to analyze the morphological diversity of the precarious settlement in relation to its surroundings, considering the involved agents and their socio-economic characteristics. The study will draw upon contemporary theories of regional urbanization, addressing metropolitan and interurban influences, and will explore the concept of climate justice in the context of the social impacts from climate change. The central research question intends to understand the patterns, particularities, and trends of urban fabric in precarious settlements. The key argument guiding this work is to comprehend how this urban fabric relates to extreme events. Therefore, the main expected outcome is a synthesis of the urban characterization of the Cachoeira das Garças Community and its surroundings, with an analysis of its relationship to extreme events in the context of Climate Justice concepts.
