Abstract

It has been demonstrated that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and exposure to hypoxia are promising strategies for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present project aims to describe the chronic effect of exposure to inter-effort recovery hypoxia (IERH) associated with a HIIT program and passive hypoxia (PH) on physiological, metabolic, morphological, and cardiorespiratory parameters in individuals with T2DM. 56 individuals will be recruited and randomly divided into 4 groups: training in 1) IERH and 2) normoxia (N), 3) passive intermittent exposure to hypoxia (PH), and 4) control (CON). Participants will undergo 8 weeks of exposure to PH or HIIT under the established conditions, both with a frequency of 3 times a week. The training will consist of efforts on a cycle ergometer at an intensity corresponding to the rate of perceived exertion of anaerobic threshold 2 effort and peak oxygen consumption intensity (iVO2peak). The external dose of hypoxia between PH and IERH will be equal. Throughout the study, parameters related to glucose homeostasis, inflammatory and hormonal profiles, resting metabolic rate, body composition, blood pressure, endothelial function, VO2peak, metabolic thresholds, and food quality consumption will be monitored. Statistical analysis will be performed using the two-way ANOVA test for repeated measures [RMANOVA, time x group]. The effect size d will be used, where: <0.2 is considered trivial; >0.2 small; >0.5 moderate; >0.8 large.
