Abstract

Metal-air batteries are excellent candidates as high-energy density energy storage device. They rely on the oxygen reactions in the positive electrode to store and release energy. Nowadays, Zn-air batteries is the commercially available example of this class of battery, but they are non-rechargeable. Li-air batteries are largely studied due to high theoretical capacity and energy density compared to conventional Li-ion batteries, and in theory are rechargeable. Nonetheless, they are still incipient and demand fundamental investigation on all batteries parts, as negative and positive electrode, and the electrolyte. One main issue with air batteries is complicated oxygen reaction, which may take different paths on charge and discharge, which results in large voltage hysteresis and hampers the battery round trip efficiency. With that, the development on electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction and for the oxygen evolution reaction is pivotal to enhance the performance of the positive electrode in metal-air batteries. In this project, we will evaluate the performance of iron based catalyst due to its promising as catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction and to its natural abundance.
