Abstract

Substance use disorder is a major public health problem worldwide, especially when it occurs due to the concomitant use of more than one substance. The treatments used to date have low efficacy since a large number of users relapse into the use of these substances. Thus, studies on the association of therapies may be promising for treating SUD. Studies suggest that varenicline, a nicotinic agonist, in combination with contingency management therapy, maybe a new tool for this treatment. Thus, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of the contingency management intervention associated with the administration of varenicline in alcohol use disorder concomitantly with nicotine. For this, a randomized and controlled clinical study will be conducted with n = 205 patients, comprising 2 arms focusing on 1) alcohol use, 2) smoking, and 3) concomitant use as primary outcomes. Outcomes will be assessed by clinical laboratory tests and ASI-Lite (self-report), Alcohol Craving and Withdrawal (VAS), Alcohol Timeline Tracking (self-report), Health-related Quality of Life (self-report), Psychopathology (BSI), Tobacco Dependence (Fagerström), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Tobacco Use (Biochemical CO), Alcohol Dependence (AUDIT), Alcohol Withdrawal (SHOT), Alcohol Motivation Measures, ANA: (Incentive Salience, Negative Emotionality, Executive Function). In addition, strategies to deal with missing data in SUD treatment trials will be undertaken.
