Abstract

This project proposes a detailed and consistent study about the movement of Lima Barreto's work in Portugal, as well as the relationship between the writer from Rio de Janeiro and Portuguese writers. The aim is to analyze the cross-border connections between these two universes of cultural production, assessing possible influences that reading and contact with Portuguese intellectuals had on his literary production, as well as his possible insertions into the Portuguese literary universe. In which periodicals was Lima Barreto somewhat appreciated? Which Portuguese writers had contact with his work? In what way were these writers present in other the texts written by the author of "Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma"? After all, what was the relationship established by Lima Barreto with different Portuguese scholars who were somehow read and discussed in his articles, chronicles and other writings? Considering that "what comes from one place never arrives intact at another, especially when it comes to the ideas movement, cultural traditions and political experiences", as Edilene Toledo mentions, the aim is to understand how Lima Barreto took over readings of Portuguese authors and, based on them, issued his own conception of art and literature, handling a type of cultural facilitation practice as a historical subject. Likewise, the perspective of the exchange and movement of people, ideas and institutions is adopted - as a cross-border history template -, being the object of the analysis the arrival of the Rio de Janeiro writer in Portugal.
