Abstract

Urban green areas play a fundamental role in providing multiple social, environmental and economic benefits, which positively influence quality of life and environmental sustainability. This study aims to identify and analyze regulatory ecosystem services, with an emphasis on CO2 capture, provided by green areas in Ibero-American cities, specifically in the cities of Campinas (Brazil) and Coimbra (Portugal). The research seeks to evaluate the impact of these areas on climate change mitigation and the economic valorization of carbon dioxide storage using the I-Tree software to quantify sequestration. In addition, public policies, legislation and local initiatives related to the topic will be studied and compared. The work thus aims to offer a theoretical and practical basis to strengthen the formulation of public policies that encourage the conservation and expansion of urban green spaces, promoting a broader understanding of the interactions between ecological and social functions of these ecosystems.
