Abstract

The Post-Doctoral Research Project Abroad addresses paradigmatic women writers and journalists of the 19th and the early 20th centuries to explore their roles in the literature and in the press, especially when their works concern the "Woman Question" in the Victorian period and practices of writing that were gender-constricted and that, consequently, led to new forms of expression and subversion. To that aim, we mobilize research fields such as bibliographical studies, feminist literary theory, as well as selected works by women journalists in England, and to a certain extent in France and in Portugal. The bibliographical studies by Donald F. McKenzie provide methods for including all texts, regardless of the canon's erasure mechanisms. Also, feminist literary theory contemplates a tradition of women writers. Finally, a selection of texts by Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Virginia Woolf, as well as of the periodicals The English Women's Journal (1858-1864) and Victoria Magazine (1863-1880) represent pioneering textual practices in the literature and the press of their time in the light of feminism and gender theory. Upon returning to Brazil, the work of Júlia Lopes de Almeida will be debated in a comparative perspective with the mentioned English feminist periodicals and women writers. The Post-Doctoral Fellowship Research in Brazil will evaluate Júlia Lopes de Almeida's literary novelty in dialogue with paradigmatic European women writers and journalists that established the debate regarding women at the fin-de-siècle. Thus, it will be possible to discuss the contribution of Almeida's work to the structure of a literary field in Brazil, in competition with an international one, from a perspective informed by first-wave feminisms and gender problems.
