Abstract

We are requesting a research internship abroad scholarship (BEPE), linked to the dissertation The Problem of the Primitive in the Legacy of Aby Warburg: Frances Yates between Art History and Anthropology (1938-1964) - FAPESP process: 23/07581-0, with the aim of accessing primary sources and secondary literature that require detailed on-site examination. We intend to deepen the understanding of the relationship between Frances Yates and Aby Warburg's legacy by exploring the Warburgian itineraries present in the construction of the arguments developed in her main work, Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition. The plan involves conducting research in England, at Durham University, the host institution, and in London, at the Warburg Institute, which is currently part of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. This project also aims to continue the ties established by the recently-concluded SPRINT-FAPESP Project No. 2018/15194-9, which fostered collaboration between UNIFESP and Durham University, establishing valuable academic connections that continue to serve as a foundation for scholarly exchanges and ongoing collaboration between the institutions. The internship will entail the inventory, qualification, and categorization of the items to be researched, with the aim of providing theoretical and methodological support for the dissertation. Among the materials available, particularly in the rare books collection of Durham University's library, as well as in the archive and the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg, both part of the Warburg Institute, are the Dame Frances Yates papers and related documents. Access to these materials will allow us to reconstruct the networks that underpin the development of Yates' arguments, considering both their material and conceptual conditions of production. Furthermore, by analyzing Yates' integration into Aby Warburg's circle up to the 1960s, this study will also offer new perspectives on the transformation and ongoing impact of this legacy in art historiography, given Yates' active role in mobilizing this framework.
