Abstract This research will analyze two tales by Rio de Janeiro journalist João do Rio, being themThe Baby of Pink Tarlatana and The Adventure of Rosendo Moura, it will focus on horror aspects present in the works, as well as the process of elaborating the scenario and the building the characters that lead to events classified in the order of the strange and that allow us to dissociate from the sphere of normality that governs societies. Furthermore, one of the focuses of the current work will also be the study of Carnival, in view of that both stories occur during this time of year, and how this festivity allows extra-ordinary events to happen by bringing out the dark side of human beings. These considerations will allow us to deeper into the knowledge we have about the historical society of Rio de Janeiro at the time, as well as interpret a lugubrious facet of the human being, but the focus will be on the characteristics of horror literature in Brazil, especially in the times carnivalesques, and the valorization and the representation of a writer little known in contemporary literary criticism. To this end, the research will be substantiated on studies by Roberto Damatta, Mikhail Bakhtin, Tzvetan Todorov, Orna Levin, Júlio França, Oscar Nestarez and Sigmundo Freud, among other authors who studied theliterary criticism in these fields. | |
