Abstract

Summary:The learning of techniques in Liquid and Gas Chromatography, along with Mass Spectrometry, offers practical training in advanced methodologies for the separation and analysis of chemical compounds. The internship allows students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge, applying these techniques in various fields, such as the characterization and quantification of complex substances.Mass spectrometry is used to identify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of their ions, employing ionization sources such as ESI and MALDI, which allow for the ionization of large molecules without fragmentation. In our laboratories, we utilize three mass spectrometers:LC-MS 2020 (Shimadzu): High-Pressure Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) coupled with a mass spectrometer, primarily used for quality control in peptide synthesis.MALDI-TOF Microflex (Bruker Daltonics): Used for peptide synthesis and identification of microorganisms, establishing itself in clinical microbiology.Impact IIQqTOF (Bruker Daltonics): A hybrid QTOF mass spectrometer applied in proteomics and identification of biomarkers for detection and treatment of cancer.Additionally, the GC-MS system (Shimadzu) is employed to analyze metabolites as potential biomarkers in various pathologies, collaborating with the Central Laboratory of Hospital São Paulo in the development of diagnostics. The LC-MS-MS triple quadrupole (Shimadzu) is a high-sensitivity technique essential for precise quantification of compounds, contributing to advanced diagnostics and monitoring of patients in ICUs.Student Leonardo Jorge de Nascimento, from the Federal University of Paraná, participated in the Congress of the Brazilian Society of Proteomics in September 2024. He expressed interest in learning mass spectrometry and chromatography techniques, planning to bring microorganisms from the aerial part of wheat for identification, a topic he is developing at his university
