Abstract

Oropouche virus (OROV) is a reemerging virus that poses a growing threat to public health in the Americas, with a possible global impact. In Brazil, the recent circulation of the virus particularly observed in 2023 to 2024 represents an increase in incidence of approximately 200-fold. This highlights the must to understand the basic characteristics associated with the maintenance of this virus in nature, including the description of its genetic patterns and their association with virus-host specificity. In this sense, this project aims to investigate genomic aspects linked to virus-host specificity for OROV. The material to be investigated will be genomic sequences available in public databases, such as GenBank, and we will use this data, characterizing the use of nucleotides, codons, in addition to calculating the codon adaptation index compared with the genomes of putative hosts and vectors. The methods to be employed involve computational tools for genomic data analysis, data integration and data mining. We hope that at the end of the study, the results will allow a detailed understanding of the genomic patterns linked to adaptation to vertebrate hosts and vectors, providing insights for more effective surveillance and control strategies. This will allow the advancement of knowledge about the ecology, evolution and epidemiology of OROV, which currently represents a major public health problem.
