Abstract

The purpose of this project is to produce the first annotated translation of the first two books that make up the Traité de l'Harmonie Réduite à ses Principes Naturels by the French theorist, philosopher, and composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, as well as to conduct interdisciplinary research on the work and write the preface for the translation. Comprising four books, the first two establish the mathematical and philosophical foundation upon which Rameau developed his theoretical-philosophical work. This is an inherently interdisciplinary project due to the nature of the subject matter, integrating musicology, philosophy, and translation studies. The research, from the musicological and aesthetic perspective of the work, as well as the supervision of the translation, is being continuously guided by Prof. Dr. Mario Rodrigues Videira Junior and conducted within the Department of Music at USP (University of São Paulo). Rameau's work, which had a decisive impact on the philosophical and aesthetic conception of music, cannot be neglected in its inherently philosophical aspect, as doing so risks losing substantial effects on culture. Therefore, the aesthetic and philosophical research of the work is being co-supervised in partnership with Prof. Dr. Maud Pouradier, professor of philosophy and aesthetics at the Université de Caen, specifically recommended to assist in this project by Prof. Dr. Carole Talon-Hugon, professor of art philosophy and aesthetics at Sorbonne University and president of the Société Française d'Esthétique. As agreed in a meeting, a research internship at the Université de Caen under her guidance is planned. Finally, this project includes translation studies, with the support of courses and researchers from the Department of Translation Studies at USP, particularly Prof. Dr. John Milton.
