Abstract

This project is part of a larger research initiative, ongoing for the past 20 months in the Multimedia Department at Unicamp, focusing on the history of Brazilian visual artists experimentations with audiovisual media between 1960 and 1977. With a planned tenure as visiting scholars at the Graduate Center of Cuny, we intend to investigate the time that some of these artists-such as Hélio Oiticica, Antonio Dias, Iole de Freitas, and Regina Vater-spent in New York, where they engaged with cinema or produced their first films. Through research in archives, we hope to uncover documents and materials that reveal how their stay in New York may have influenced their approaches to audiovisual media. In parallel, we intend to deepen our advanced research on the emergence of video art in Brazil, which, as our findings suggest, was closely linked to a dialogue with the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Philadelphia. Ultimately, we aim to understand how this period of international engagement contributed to a reflective turn in which these artists began exploring their identities as Latin Americans.
