Abstract

Integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) at the distribution grid has encouraged the deployment of microgrids. The microgrids, depending on how they control the DERs through the energy management system (EMS), can benefit the electric system. The past implementations of microgrids used rule-based control, where the EMS defined DERs operation following those rules. However, the improvements in metering and data collection in different devices allowed data-driven strategies to be independently developed for the DERs and for the EMS. In that scenario, data-driven control and monitoring have been developed, especially for battery energy storage systems (BESS) which is one of the most critical equipment in microgrids. The BESS can contribute in connected mode, storing renewable excess energy, and in the islanded mode as the grid-former device. Even though the data-driven strategies for EMS and BESS have been deployed, no studies have been conducted on how they could be integrated. This BEPE research project aims to use data from the BESS of a medium-voltage microgrid installed in Brazil to develop research about data-driven integration between the EMS and the BESS.
