Abstract

The industrialization process in São Paulo, its origins and development, is much richer and more complex than the material remains in the urban landscape can reveal and much more heterogeneous than historiography has been able to record. In fact, numerous studies in the field of conservation and restoration have been carried out on cases of particular interest for the preservation of memory, highlighting important information about realities whose physical presence in buildings persists and resists strong real estate speculation. Classical historiography, on what can be considered the origins of São Paulo's industry, also provides us with the numerical inputs on which they built their interpretations, the industrial censuses. However, it is possible to see that the censuses are not exhaustive and that the dynamics of the city of São Paulo have changed to the point that portions of its past landscapes have become unrecognizable. In other words, there are significant gaps in this narrative that, through the scanning of diverse serial textual sources and their subsequent location in space-time using the Historical GIS (Geographic Information System), can reveal another level of understanding about how industry in São Paulo was actually structured over time and in the composition of the urban space, in all its diversity and geography.
