Abstract

This historical-analytical research aims to understand the conceptions and the path of studies of the brazilian engineer, astronomer and mathematician Manuel Amoroso Costa (1885-1928) in relation to the concepts he addresses in chapter 3 of his book "The Fundamental Ideas of Mathematics". Assuming that the text is not indifferent to the ideas it contains, the approach will involve the transcription and critical analysis of the digitalized version of the manuscripts of this chapter and the comparative examination between the drafts of the text and its published version. As a result, it is expected that new dimensions of Amoroso Costa's mathematical work will be revealed, contributing to the construction of knowledge about the history of mathematics in Brazil in the first decades of the 20th century and to the recovery of the national scientific memory.
