Abstract

Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, body dysmorphic disorder, and muscle dysmorphia are severe psychological conditions that share a common component: body image disturbance. While various tools have been developed to assess these conditions individually, they face challenges related to inconsistent internal structures or insufficient theoretical scope. A notable step forward in this field would involve creating a comprehensive battery of instruments capable of evaluating each condition separately while also providing a general measure of body image disturbance. Such a tool would enhance the ability to assess comorbidities across these disorders and identify subclinical cases where individuals, despite not meeting diagnostic criteria, suffer significant life impairments. Additionally, addressing response bias - specifically acquiescence - would further refine the measurement process. An instrument to address these gaps is currently under development in Brazil - the BATIC. Adapting this instrument into English has the potential to make a significant impact in the field, contributing to the global advancement of assessment and intervention in body image disorders. Therefore, in accordance with the candidate's doctoral research project, this project aims to: (a) create an English-adapted version of the body image disorders assessment battery; (b) test the internal structure of the English version of the scale; (c) test its relationship with external variables; and (d) verify the psychometric invariance between the English and Portuguese versions of the battery.
