Abstract

The increase in extreme weather events, such as cold fronts and heat waves, has created significant challenges for the planning of medium-voltage distribution networks. Such events often result in prolonged recovery times for power supply during critical periods, highlighting the need for grid reinforcement plans to be considered in planning horizons of up to five years. Electric energy storage systems in energy communities connected to the electricity grid emerge as a promising solution to address these challenges, offering more stability and resilience. However, installing these systems is expensive, and determining the best locations for their implementation remains a topic of research in the specialized literature. This project aims to develop a two-stage stochastic programming model to size and allocate energy storage systems in energy communities, ensuring greater robustness to medium-voltage distribution networks. The model will consider the correlation between demand and generation at each bus, as well as the extreme conditions that affect the operation of the storage systems. Additionally, the results of this project could improve voltage control and reduce electrical losses, promoting more resilient planning, especially in the face of extreme weather events for a horizon of up to five years.
