Abstract

This research project investigates the debates, articulations, and dissensions established within the colored community of Buenos Aires about forms of inclusion and coping with socio-racial barriers that began to structure the Argentine Republic, between 1880 and 1915. To this end, it is proposed to analyze the recreational association practices of the Afro-Porteño population, based on their activities in carnival societies and the organization of dances, as a window to understand the black experience in the post-abolition period and the various projects and activities political aspirations raised in defense of the expansion of rights and access to citizenship in the Argentine Republic. Black Press newspapers, mass-circulation periodicals, and the illustrated press of the time will be analyzed.
