Abstract

This study analyzes the formation and institutionalization of a Latin American scientific network between 1941 and 1964. To achieve this end, it will analyze the communications established between researchers Bernardo Houssay and Eduardo Braun Menendez, from Argentina, and four scientists who worked in São Paulo: José Ribeiro do Valle, Maurício Oscar da Rocha e Silva, José Leal Prado and Otto Bier. Based on correspondence, institutional reports and journals, the aim is to understand the main themes addressed by these researchers and also the institutional developments of these exchanges, such as the journal Acta Physiologica Latianoamericana and the foundation of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Ciencias Fisiológicas (ALACF) in 1956. This research begins in 1941, the year in which Ribeiro do Valle began communicating with the Argentinians, and lasts until 1964, when the military coup altered the relationships of sociability that had previously been established in São Paulo.
