Abstract

Climate change and global warming impacts both the Earth and humans, affecting not only social and cultural aspects, but also human health, increasing diseases from sun exposure. Skin aging involves complex factors, with UV radiation being a key contributor to damage, UVA for instance harms collagen and elastin in the dermis, while UVB directly damages DNA in the epidermis. Sunscreens with UV filters help prevent damage, but some ingredients like avobenzone can degrade and cause reactions, which is why antioxidants that stabilize UV filters are being explored for cosmetic use, with plant-derived polyphenols showing great promise. As described before, grape pomace extract is rich in polyphenols, enhances sunscreen protection against UVA and UVB radiation, and since is a natural compound can enhance more sustainable products. In Brazil, grapes are abundant and offer a promising avenue due to their antioxidant-rich pomace, as shown in previous studies, therefore, our project aims to assess the antioxidant and photoprotective properties of a grape pomace (Vitis vinifera) extract through ex vivo and in vivo tests.
