Abstract

Brazil faces an epidemiological scenario characterized by the triple burden of disease, combining the persistence of infectious diseases, the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and the growing relevance of external causes, such as violence. Among NCDs, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has gained prominence due to its high prevalence and systemic impact, including potential subclinical alterations in pulmonary function. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) plays a crucial role in neuroplasticity and autonomic regulation, areas that may directly influence respiratory function. Studies suggest that reduced BDNF levels are associated with chronic conditions and functional decline. However, the relationship between BDNF and pulmonary parameters in elderly individuals with T2DM remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the correlation between serum BDNF levels and pulmonary function in elderly individuals with T2DM by analyzing parameters such as FEV1, FVC, and the Tiffeneau-Pinelli index. The research includes BDNF quantification in biological samples, comparative analysis between individuals with and without subclinical respiratory changes, and pulmonary function testing. The expected results may contribute to understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of T2DM and its implications for pulmonary health.
