Abstract

This project aims to research the political vocabulary used in Gazeta da Restauração (1641-1647) and Mercurio Portuguez (1663-1666), focusing on revolts, rebellions, insurrections, uprisings, and what we now understand as revolutions. Therefore, we aim to investigate how acts of political rupture were reported in these periodicals, seeking to map their semantic field during the Restoration Wars and the efforts to reestablish a Portuguese dynasty. We ask whether it would be possible to identify the emergence of a lexicon on the Revolution through the analysis of the semantic field used in the Gazeta and the Mercúrio. The project is part of the History of Concepts, which will serve as a tool for a series of reflections on the relationship between language and historical facts. For the full development of this project, we request a Research Internship Abroad Grant (BEPE) to conduct research at the Center for Humanities (CHAM) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Pedro António de Almeida Cardim, for five months.
